Choosing Basement Waterproofing Systems

There are many reasons why waterproofing a basement is important. It prevents the basement from building up mildew which thrives on humidity and wetness that can surround the basement. Cracks in the walls, pipe condensation, and leaking windows are the most commonly known reasons why a basement would hold water build-up and dampness. This buildup is not good news for the basement because it can cause damage to your basement walls and floors causing all sorts of problems such as, cracks, mildew, shifting of the basement floor are just some examples.

To choose a good waterproofing system, needing to select the type of system that will be appropriate is important. There is an external waterproofing system which is placing layers of thick, plastic tarp or vinyl covering underground after the foundation has been dug up. This method will help eliminate the underground water pressure that can build over time. This will also help prevent leaks and cracks that might develop around the wall and windows if not treated.

Another basement water-proofing system is internal, meaning that fixing a leaky pipe or installation of a sump pump will most likely be needed. There is a method of waterproofing system that is effective and is used by many people. Cavity drain membrane system helps prevent basement dampness by holding the water back. This works by allowing the water to be penetrated throughout the structure but still controlling the water by trapping it in an air gap. The water is then directed to a pump or another draining point.

Cementitious coatings is another method for waterproofing basements. This is a special coating that can withstand the external water pressure that is present in the basement.

There is also a method that uses polyurethane spray or a foam. This spray or foam is extremely water resistant and effective. It is a very strong sealant that can repair cracks and leaks that are present in the walls and around the windows.

Having a main drain in the floor of the basement which channels and directs the water away and out of the basement, is another method of waterproofing a basement. This should be done when the basement is first built. Having special channels installed in the lower interior of the basement walls is very effective. These channels have water leaking in by tiny holes along the lower wall, the water then is carried away by a sump pump system.

Keeping the basement free of water and dampness involves the right waterproofing system that works effectively. With these methods, it is very effective to keep the basement in good condition. By inspecting where the problem started in the first place, it will be easier to identify the area of damage that includes seepage, rust cracks, mildew, or damp walls. By finding and fixing the problem during the first inspection, it will be easier to prevent damage from happening in the first place. If there is damage already, it will be able to be fixed, so the problem will not return.
